Reinsurance plays a key role in the
insurance industry and in 2007, some 44% of Amlin’s gross
written premium related to reinsurance business. Reinsurers provide
extra capacity, create stability (particularly by offsetting
primary catastrophe losses) and play an important role in
strengthening insurers’ finances.
Amlin is a buyer and seller of reinsurance through Lloyd's Syndicate 2001 and Amlin Bermuda. We purchase a variety of reinsurance types to broaden the risk profile of the syndicate and to provide us with the appropriate cover for the risks that we underwrite.
We also provide reinsurance to other insurers across the world, which helps spread their large and complex risks more widely.
In December 2005, we set up
Amlin Bermuda, a
specialist reinsurance
underwriting business, to provide further capacity to this
market.
